The Careful Choosing of Names: Bingo Bolger-Baggins

Bingo the koala bear curled up on the sofa next to Iorhael, munching eucalyptus cough lozenges, dreaming of explosive devices, plotting world domination, dreading the return of two children named Christopher and Prisca who acted like they owned him, and wondering why their father shook his head when he looked at Bingo, and said, "I still like that name, but I suppose I should use the other one--"Frodo"--instead."

["Tolkien had as yet no clear idea of what the new story was going to be about . . . decided to introduce a new character . . . and to give him the name of a family of toy koala bears owned by his children, 'The Bingos'." Carpenter, 185; also see The History of the LOTR. Pt.I, 34 for the Bingos' habits]
